H.E. Muktar Mohamed Ware, Ethiopia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Somalia, presented his letter of credentials to the President of #Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud commended Ethiopia for its contribution to Somalia’s peace and stability, adding that cooperation between the two brotherly peoples in areas other than peace and stability is growing steadily.

For his part, Ambassador Muktar Mohamed Ware remarked that Somalia and Ethiopia share various values and that the experience of cooperation in other domains, aside from the two countries’ cooperation in the realm of peace and security, should evolve in other sectors as well.

H.E. Demeke met with H.E. Blinken today

Deputy Prime Minister & Foreign Minister H.E. Demeke Mekonnen met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and discussed a wide range of matters spanning from the implementation of the cessation of hostilities agreement to Ethiopia’s economic situation & regional peace & security issues.

Mr. Demeke also explained to the Secretary about the Government of Ethiopia’s efforts to maintain the AU-led GERD talks, fight against terrorism in Somalia, put relations with Sudan on a positive trajectory, and provide support for peace in South Sudan.

The Secretary of State arrived in Addis Ababa yesterday. He will have a one-day official working visit in Ethiopia and expects to meet other high-level officials from the Government of Ethiopia and the AU.

H.E. Mr. Demeke Mekonnen Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia met today with H.E. Ambassador Enrique Mora, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service, to discuss a wide range of bilateral & multilateral issues of mutual importance For his part, Ambassador Enrique Mora welcomed Ethiopia’s efforts to implement the Peace Agreement; including signing the CoH, providing unrestricted access to humanitarian supplies, and addressing accountability through a transitional justice mechanism. He stated that peace in Ethiopia is necessary for peace in the Horn of Africa.

Finally, Ambassador Enrique said that the European Union is keen on enhancing relations with Ethiopia.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Mogadishu, Somalia to participate in the regional forum convened towards strengthening the campaign against Al-Shabaab in East Africa. The leaders’ discussion is aimed at providing regional solutions to regional problems.

The Government of Ethiopia confirmed the peaceful release of six Djiboutian Army personnel held hostage by The Front for the Restoration of Unity and Democracy (FRUD) militants.

H.E. Ambassador Fesseha Shawel, Director General of African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the Government of Ethiopia secured the release of FRUD militants through meticulous intelligence and police operations.

According to Ambassador Fesseha, community leaders and the administration of the Afar Regional State played critical roles in the process.

He stated that the army members were handed over to the Djiboutian administration, emphasizing cooperation between Ethiopia and Djibouti over peace and security issues.

Six Djiboutian Army soldiers went missing on October 6, 2022, after the ‘Armed FRUD’ attacked the Djiboutian army post in Garabtissan, in the Tadjourah Region.

Spokesperson for Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ambassador Meles Alem, briefed the media today (December 15) about the various diplomatic activities over the past two weeks.

He stated that H.E. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s visit to the United States created an opportunity to strengthen ties with the United States and renew cooperation with international organizations.

Ambassador Meles Alem also mentioned the press briefing of H.E. Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, to the ambassadors of the European Union and its member countries in Addis Ababa.

He said the European Union and the Union’s member nations stated their desire to advance economic and diplomatic ties with Ethiopia, while Mr. Demeke spoke about the implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement and resumption of basic services in conflict-affected areas.

Ambassador Meles also mentioned the repatriation of more than 3,000 of our citizens from Saudi Arabia and efforts underway to investigate the death of Ethiopian citizens on the outskirts of the Zambian capital.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, Mr. Demeke Mekonnen, held a discussion with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye, H.E. Mr. Mevlut Cavusoglu, on the bilateral issues between the two countries in Abu Dhabi.

Mr. Demeke, who is participating in the Sir Bani Yas Forum organized by the United Arab Emirates, explained the current developments in Ethiopia in his discussion with the Turkish Foreign Minister.

He mentioned the peace agreement that was signed between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF in Pretoria last week.

He explained that the government is carrying out many activities to ensure lasting peace.

Mr. Demeke also underscored the activities that are being taken to further strengthen the longstanding friendly relationship between the two nations.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye, Mevlut Cavusoglu, expressed the happiness of the Turkish government that the peace agreement was signed to resolve the conflict in northern Ethiopia through dialogue.

The Minister, emphasizing that the peace of Ethiopia has made a great contribution to the stability of the region, indicated that Turkiye will provide all-round support in the effort to ensure peace in Ethiopia by implementing the peace agreement.

He also assured that the work being done to increase Turkey’s bilateral relations with Ethiopia in all fields will continue.

The International Community based in Addis Ababa was briefed today (November 5) about the agreement signed between the Government of Ethiopia and the TPLF in South Africa.

The briefing was held to give further clarification and updates regarding the process during the agreement, the contents of the agreement, the next steps in the implementation of the deal, expectations from friends and partners, as well as an expression of gratitude for all who contributed to the realization of the agreement.

Ambassador Redwan Hussien, National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, Dr. Gedion Timotiwos, Minister of Justice, delivered the briefing and addressed the questions raised by participants.

Ambassador Redwan Hussien updated the international community on the steps being taken for implementation of the agreement, which include an exchange of phone calls and an expected in-person meeting between the commander of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces and the military leader of the TPLF in relation to disarmament.

Attendees, ambassadors, and heads of international organizations, based in Addis Ababa applauded the agreement between the Federal Government of Ethiopia and the TPLF to bring about peace and stability in the northern part of Ethiopia and expressed firm support for its implementation.

Participants also expressed support for the efforts underway regarding the reconstruction of infrastructure and basic services and stated their further commitment and solidarity regarding efforts to rebuild conflict affected areas.

The 16th Ethio-Djibouti Ministerial Joint Commission meeting kicked off in Addis Ababa today (October 25), focusing on various issues of common interest between the two countries.

In his opening remarks, H.E. Ambassador Fesseha Shawel, Director General of African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, welcomed the Djiboutian delegation and expressed his hope that the meeting would be candid and fruitful.

He said that the people of Ethiopia and Djibouti have strong and longstanding relationships which could be reflected by intertwined culture, religion, language, tradition and history. “I am confident that this meeting will further strengthen the deep relations between Ethiopia and Djibouti,” he said.

Mahdi Abseih, Head of Djibouti Delegation and Director of Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, for his part, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the warm welcome accorded to him and the delegation.

He mentioned that the ties between the two countries have always been in the spirit of the unique brotherly bonds between their peoples.

The joint ministerial commission meeting, in its two-day sessions, will touch upon cooperation between the two nations regarding political, economic, and transport and logistics issues.

In today’s session, in particular, the meeting discussed cooperation in trade and the economy, as well as logistics and transport.

The agreed minutes on the issues discussed in today’s and tomorrow’s sessions will be presented to the ministerial sessions, which will commence on Thursday, for inking agreements.

The joint commission was established on March 21, 1981, has been held 15 times before. The last Ethio-Djibouti Joint Ministerial Commission meeting was held in Djibouti in 2019.
