Consular Service

All consular and diaspora services currently being offered on an appointment basis at the Embassy are suspended, until further notice. This also includes in-person collections.

Consular operational hours will be limited to Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10.00am4.00pm for the processing of the following postal applications ONLY:

  • Visas
  • Ethiopian-origin ID Card Renewal
  • Passport Renewal
  • Legalization
  • Confirmation of Pension Eligibility

In addition to these postal applications, the Consular section will be processing death certificates in-person strictly on a case by case basis and by appointment only. For further information, contact the Consular section on 613-565-6637.

  • Please note that without a prior appointment, the consular team will be unable to deal with your case and you will be asked to book an appointment for a future date. To avoid disappointment, schedule an appointment by contacting us on .
  • Effective June 1, 2018, the Main Department for Immigration and Nationality Affair, in collaboration with Ethiopian Airlines, rolled out its e-visa service to all international visitors to Ethiopia. Therefore, all applicants are urged to apply for their visas online, exclusively at www.evisa.gov.et
  • The Consular Section only accepts credit and debit card payments for all Consular Services. Payments by cash, postal orders or banker’s draft are no longer accepted.

Department for Immigration and Nationality Affairs, can only be found at www.evisa.gov.et.Any other websites purporting to offer online visa services to Ethiopia are fraudulent. The Government of Ethiopia will not be liable for any payments made nor for any inconvenience caused to applicants submitting their applications via these websites.

Questions And Answers

All visitors to Ethiopia, with the exception of nationals from Djibouti and Kenya, are required to apply for a visa. See <link> for further information. Travellers who arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport to catch a connecting flight to an onward destination do not require a visa.

An appointment is not required. Please submit your application at any time during the Consular working hours.

It takes up to 3 working days to process a visa application. Postal applications take longer to process.

We only accept debit or credit cards. Please review the Table of Fees (link to fees table) for further information.

e-Visas are administered by the Main Department of Immigration and Nationality Affairs in Ethiopia. You may check e-Visa status online at www.evisa.gov.et. Once e-Visa is approved, an approval letter is sent directly to your email address.
