Bill Gates received the degree from Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalgen at a ceremony held on the university campus.
Speaking on the occasion, the premier said Gates was honoured for the radical change he brought to the world through technology and his philanthropic activities in Africa and other low-income countries.
Realizing the key role of technology to growth, the Ethiopian government has been paying huge attention to the sector, he said, adding that the support of the business tycoon is immense in this respect.
The Bill and Foundation co-founded with his wife Melinda has in particular been playing huge role in extricating many developing countries, including Ethiopia, from poverty, Prime Minister Hailemariam noted.
The foundation is also making significant contributions in improving health and strengthening the economic capabitiy of the world, he added.
Addis Ababa University President, Dr.Admasu Tsegaye, on his part said the university decides to confer on Bill Gates honorary doctorate degree for his invention in information which helps the interconnection of people across the globe.
Bill Gates thanked the Ethiopian government for recognizing his deeds, and noted that the country was able to register encouraging results in health and agriculture as it gave due attention to the sectors.
Gates further indicted Ethiopia deserves special appreciation for deploying thousands of experts in the activities and establishing agricultural transformation agency.
Bill underscored the need for Africa to focus on health and nutrition to sustain its economic development.
He further stated that Bill and Melinda will pursue its strategic investments in Ethiopia and Africa to ensure lasting development.
