The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD3), which was concluded yesterday, has basically changed Ethiopia's image, it was indicated.
Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Tedros Adhanom and Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Sufian Ahmed, gave a joint press conference today following the conclusion of the conference.
Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Sufian Ahmed, said Ethiopia has successfully hosted the conference surpassing expectations and with unmatched the hospitality that was appreciated by delegates of the conference.
During the conference, Ethiopia showcased its economic sectors, cultural heritages, as well as untapped investment and tourism potentials through the Ethiopian Village and Exhibition, he said.
The Exhibition was visited by close to 3,000 delegates as well as representatives of international businesses attending the international business forum that took place during the conference, he said.
The country has also promoted its investment areas at the high level event with the theme “Ethiopia rising” a carbon neutral middle income manufacturing hub by 2025,” he said.
The success of the conference and the groundbreaking agreement, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, show the world’s faith on Ethiopia, Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Tedros Adhanom said.
Ethiopia has played a significant role to bring participant countries to a common consensus on the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, he said.
The Addis Ababa Action Agenda includes important policy commitments and key deliverables in critical areas for sustainable development, including infrastructure, social protection, and technology.
There were agreements for international cooperation, for financing of specific areas where significant investments are needed, such as in infrastructure for energy, transport, water and sanitation, and other areas to help realize the proposed sustainable development goals, it was noted

A 30-person Korean delegation will take part in the conference, according to Korean Ambassador to Ethiopia, Kim Moon-hwan.
The East Asian country is participating at the finance and development conference for the first time since it got registered as a donor country in 2010 by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Development Assistance Committee (DAC).
South Korea, a country which was suffering from deep rooted poverty 50 years ago, has transformed itself to a donor nation that increased its per capita income from 80 USD in 1960s to 2,000 USD six years ago.
The country will present the roadmap it used to bring about development to the conference, it was indicated.
Heads of state and government, representatives of the private sector, financial institutions, civil society and others will take part in the four-day conference in Addis Ababa to ensure the success of the 17-point sustainable development goal to be officially declared in New York in September.
On the sideline of the conference, other meetings will be held.

A two-day Ethio-Canada Business Forum opened on Monday (February 23) in Addis Ababa to discuss furtherance of trade, investment and business engagements between the two countries. Co-organized by the Canadian Embassy to Ethiopia and Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the forum is part of the events marking the 50th Anniversary of Ethio-Canada Friendship. It was attended by a Canadian Trade Mission headed by Senator Don Meredith with 27 representatives of Canadian companies as well as high-level Government officials and leaders of business organizations in Ethiopia. Ambassador Taye Atskeselassie, Director-General of American Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, welcomed the delegates and expressed thanks to the Canadian Government and business representatives for showing interest in investing in Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Canada, Ambassador Birtukan Ayano, said the meeting was an important milestone in forging business ties at a time while the two countries were celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Ethio-Canada Friendship. Ambassador Birtukan, who noted that Ethiopia considers Canada as one of key development partners, stated that the occasion would promote Ethiopia’s business opportunities. She pointed out that Ethio-Canada relations were beginning to show a promising trend with the keenness of Canadian companies to explore trade, investment and business opportunities in Ethiopia. Recalling the successful Canada-Africa and Canada-Ethiopia Business Fora held last year in Toronto, she said these had displayed a true picture of Ethiopia’s mining and energy potential and had also identified Ethiopia as a focus country for Canada’s development cooperation. Senator Don Meredith, who emphasized the opportunity provided by the meeting to introduce Canadian companies to Ethiopia’s investment and businesses opportunities, said the business forum would augment the growing commercial relations of the two countries. The Senator said the Canadian Trade Mission had made clear their interest to invest in Ethiopia. The Forum features presentations on Ethiopia’s investment opportunities as well as on the mining and energy sectors. It is also giving an opportunity to showcase experience-sharing events, question and answer sessions, networking and business-to-business meetings.
Scholars should have to play a vivid role in creating a society based on consensus by identifying gaps in policies and their implementations, Civil Service State Minister Adamu Ayana said. The state minister has called on scholars in the sector to undertake researches in order to accelerate the country's all-round growth.Various research papers were presented today by different scholars at a discussion forum organized by Civil Service University. Speaking on the occasion, Civil Service State Minister Adamu Ayana said the government has been developing concepts that have strong foundation by taking the ideas of scholars as inputs and relating them to policies that are issued.Presenting a research paper on the implementation of the country's revised tax collection system, Dr. Delisa Daba said problems are observed in the country's tax collection system. He said the contribution of tax to the GDP is not more than 11 percent. This is less than the sub-Saharan African average and low when compared to that of Kenya, Dr. Delisa pointed out.According to him, the implementations of the revised tax law should therefore be realized and reduction of tax as incentive scheme has to be stopped. To transform the country's agricultural led economy to industrial led economy, the government should once again revise the informal sectors from which taxation is exempted. The President of Civil Service University, Dr. Hailemichael Abera said on his part conducting similar studies and undertaking activities that can bring changes in the country would continue.
Ambassador Birtukan Ayano Dadi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to Canada presented her letters of credence to His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on Tuesday January 28, 2014 at Rideau Hall.
On the occasion, H.E. Ambassador Birtukan and the Governor General had the opportunity to discuss the longstanding relation and friendship that the peoples and governments of the two countries enjoy and vowed to further strengthen it in the years to come.
The Governor General remarked that Canadian mining companies have identified Ethiopia as having great investment potential. H. E. Ambassador Birtukan noted that Ethiopia has made poverty reduction and sustainable development the core of its economic growth policy. She pointed out that she would work to improve trade and investment ties between the two countries. She took the opportunity to thank the people and government of Canada for their unreserved support to Ethiopia.
